Cooling The Greenhouse and Shopping

Today with the temperatures rising and having so many little seedlings in the greenhouse it was time to give them some protection from the sun
The south side of the greenhouse got a coat of cool glass, its a powder you mix with water and you can either spray or paint it on the outside of the glass, then in the autumn you wipe it off with a dry cloth, I sprayed it on, I have used cool glass for a few years now and find it very effective, it creates a light shade and protects the plants from burning with the sun, you can fix up shade netting or blinds but I find cool glass easy and instant to use and when I wipe it off later in the year I can give the greenhouse glass a good wash down ready for winter.
Went into town today with my lovely neighbour senior C we both needed animal feed and we visited a few shops while we were there, I had points to use in The Works so picked myself up a lovely Garden Journal for £2
loads of room for notes little pockets to keep bits in and graph paper to draw out plans.
We popped in Morrison's I got some Scallops reduced so I am having the tonight with bacon and garlic flat bread for dinner.
I also picked up another big plastic bin to put Kara's food in so it can stay in the barn with the animal feeds, we buy her food by the sack it takes up too much space in the porch and I really don't like the smell of dog food, we have a smaller container that we fill and use daily.
Having read Sue's post (new life in the country) on the loss of her tulips to rabbits I thought I would share some of mine

The tulips were a mixed free bag of bulbs that came with one of my plant orders last Autumn so I have no idea what type they are.
I also spotted this first strawberry flowers have opened
I brought these strawberries with me I took them as runners from my old plants, I have them planted in plastic troughs and sitting in the small poly tunnel, the soil I have them planted in is from the mole hills, so soon hopefully we will have some strawberries, I think these will be kept in the poly tunnel and then I will take runners and plant up a new strawberry bed outside in the fruit area.

Time to get dinner on the go really looking forward to scallops.

  1. My greenjouses have been getting too hot as well, maybe I should think about shading them.

    1. In the past I have done shading may bank holiday, this year is the exception :-)

  2. I keep my strawberries in large pots in the Polytunnel too - that way the birds and slugs stay off them. It's meant to be getting hotter still isn't it, so your cool glass painting of the greenhouse is timely.

    1. My tulips usually get battered by rain and wind so I am enjoying this year :-)

  4. Thanks for the lift into town yesterday Dawn. Apart from Morrisons we also visited some 'interesting' stores and I collected some seeds and a couple more trees - now have two weeping willows and an acer. They will be going into large pots for now until I can prepare suitable ground somewhere for them. Hope you enjoyed your evening meal!

  5. So that's where the sun's gone, you've got it. It's been dull all week here, nothing like the beautiful weather we had last week. I know it was the hottest day of the year for some people yesterday but it was rather cool here. Your tulips are beauties, obviously brought out by the lovely weather you're having. Mine are still tight buds. Hope you enjoyed your scallops.

    1. We could dare I say do with some rain, the barrels and IBC tanks are empty making watering difficult, but i will enjoy the sunshine while it lasts :-)
