Sun Sea and Chicks

Another glorious week-end weather wise, we took Sol for his first visit to the beach

he had a lovely time sniffing out new things and paddling in the sea,
we had scallops and squid with chips for dinner sitting in the sunshine overlooking the harbour.

This week end also saw our chicks hatch out

I was very disappointed with the eggs we bought at the small holders show, when I candled them only 4 out 12 showed any signs of development I candled again last week end to make sure and it was the same result, only four hatching's I wish I could remember the name of the supplier we bought from.
These are Light Sussex and we wanted them for table birds, I will have to look round for some newly hatched ones locally to make the numbers up.
I was hoping to keep a trio to breed from and put some in the freezer.
The two batches of ducks we have hatched from our eggs are coming on well, the first batch are now fully feathered and growing well the second batch are just starting to get there real feathers.
I have also reserved 12 turkey poults from some-one locally just waiting for them to come off heat.

I did another stall yesterday at the village hall, some more shop stock gone.
The rest of the week end has been taking up with weeding watering and planting.
Thats all for now :-)

  1. Sounds like a busy weekend. Shame about the lack of chickens, I guess that is what happens sometimes. I hope that Sol enjoyed his beach time!! xx

    1. It is annoying when you pay for eggs that are suppose to be for hatching, 7 of them were not even fertile

  3. Shame about the eggs. Apart from a secretive hen who bought off ten chicks by the gas meter our other hatching, both by a hen and in the incubator have been disappointing

    1. I would prefer to hatch my own and we were hoping to have some to use as breeding stock as well as the table :-)

  4. Eggs are a shame. Last ones I paid for the chicken gave up after two days! Do you have to keep the turkeys away from the chickens?

    1. The turkeys will be a seperate enclosure away from chickens and ducks They will have there own house too, although the chickens and ducks are in seperate enclosures of there own and the ducks for the table are apart from the adult ones. I will have to start giving each pen a name :-)
