Feed Yourself For 80p a Day

With all the talk on Eat Well for Less I came across this article
Not a bad menu for the week although for me it would become boring very quickly, on the other hand if there was something I desperately needed to save for I would make the sacrifice, or if I was hard up and money was a big issue I would consider it but only after selling off everything I could.
Whenever we see these programs on TV about people struggling on benefits or living below the bread line, they always seem t have lovely homes, laptops the latest mobiles, big screen TVs they are not what I call destitute why not sell it all and feed your family is what I am always shouting at the TV.
Anyhow that's my bit of a rant and this blog isn't the place for it.
Yesterday Pam from New Life in Wales popped over and brought me a lovely treadle sewing machine that is going to be set up in the cabin, we had a cuppa and bit of cake a good natter then I took her down the cabin where she chose some fabrics to add to her stash, Pam is a lovely lady and a font of knowledge we hope to be having some crafty sessions together and are happy for other crafters to join us.
Martin is having an enforced rest day today as he is having back problems, he did manage a few little jobs this morning then we nipped into town to collect a few things, we stopped in by the fruit and veg place so I could show him were it was and I needed some onions
I got a box of mushrooms for a £1 and settled of a bag of onions for 50p I could have got a sack of onions for £1.50 but they were smaller and I don't think we could have used them before they started sprouting.
Talking of mushrooms my oyster mushrooms are starting to grow well
They are starting to sprout from other holes in the bag now as well.
I did get some shallots in a salt brine this morning, they have been sitting there for a couple of months, I forgot all about them, then watching the Big Allotment Challenge last night and they were doing pickles jogged my memory.
Has anyone else been watching the Allotment Challenge, I was disappointed that Leanne left last night I really liked her.
Right I must get on sausage and mash to do for dinner with some garlicky mushrooms.

  1. I may have to move to Wales just to join you and Pam in your cabin so you can teach me how to sew!

  2. I really envy your cut price veg, what bargains. I never see anything like that down here in the South. And your home grown mushrooms look fab too.

  3. I've watched the allotment challenge all the way through and agree about Lena - I think that she was sacrificed to save Rob who I don't really rate at all but i suppose that they've got his name against the winners trophy. What do think of 'eat' judge ? I think she can be quite rude sometimes xx

  4. I love watching Allotment Challenge, I am not sure they are the most current episodes though. I think it is a wonderful use of land and more towns, countries should encourage little gardens.

  5. I missed the program, I need someone to tell me when anything good is coming on. I just don't think to look and see. I hope the treadle settles in, goodness knows where you will put it, perhaps I need to come shopping again to make some space.

  6. I missed the Allotment challenge, but saw some of it with Tamzin (my daughter in Sheffield) last week. She and 3 friends have put their names down to have an allotment in Sheffield and I am absolutely delighted - a chip off the old block it would seem!

I will go and check out 80p a day, but guess with my diet limitations, it is probably a non starter anyway!

I'm glad you had a lovely visit from Pam - she seems a million times more accomplished with a sewing machine than I am!

  8. It seems everyone is fleeing to Wales; Pam was down near me until recently and BB I have known on internet for lot of years although we have never met. We used to belong to the same forum.

I always keep a bag of onions in and as soon as they show signs of sprouting either turn them into an onion and garlic marmalade, French Onion Soup for the Freezer or onion gravy. There is always something that can be done and then I go and get a new net of onions. I have been watching the Big Allotment Challenge. Thane Prince is a bit up herself. I liked Lena too very down to earth.

There is a spray you can get called BioFreeze. I have a long term back condition and often it is the muscles that surround the affected area that go into spasm that cause the discomfort and pain. The BioFreeze doe cost £10 a spray bottle but does last a good couple of months. It is made of natural herby things the only thing you have to be careful of is not using heat with it. The spray goes on cold and then warms up the affected area. I use that two or three times a day which helps or I get hold of Ibruprofen gel from the £1 shop and pop it on the affected area. Both help but I do prefer the spray. I have a disc out of alignment in my lower back together with arthritic hips. Its usually trial and error find what works for you. I have also found that if I get cold my back is worse then so if he sits popping a hot water bottle against the affected area. Hope it helps.

    1. I did suggest a hot water bottle but it fell on deaf ears, he does see an osteopath and has back trouble since coming back from Everest 6 years ago, it seems his hips are out of line I suppose tat is what you get from climbing mountains :-)

  9. I've seen oyster mushrooms in the shops but never bought any. Do they taste very different to the button ones?

  10. Yeah, the benefits-dependent moaners, agree with you, they seem to be able to afford the big TVs, mobiles, lap-tops, latest fashion, etc, and complain they don't get enough benefits to pay their bills or feed themselves properly, often said whilst eating a take-away.

  11. I agree with your rant! From experience I can tell you that not everyone is as you describe, but there are people who are, just like that, and worse! I hope that Martin is OK again very soon. xx
