No more back ache from splitting logs
Once he got it set up and showed me how it works, he got stuck into cutting the logs with the chain saw and I did the splitting, it was fun to use, within a couple of hours we had cut split and stacks two trailer loads of logs a job that would have taken us a week end.
Martin has had a bit of back problem for a couple of years, so anything that makes things easier and save time is a real god send.
He bought it second hand, we bought the tractor second hand when we moved here and the money saved buying used has meant we could buy lots of useful attachments so far her has got

You don't always need to buy new, the vat you pay on new is a killer.
We have just got back from collecting the goats, I will introduce them tomorrow when I can take some photos.
Dad's made a few log splitters for tractors (he used to sell the ones they made). Just be careful standing in front of them, a knotty piece can split with some force and fly out. We make sure we stand with a small guard by our legs when we use it.

DeleteLooking forward to seeing your goats. The log splitter looks great. We do not have one but our neighbour does, he has it set up on a trailer and brings it up to our place to split logs for us for the winter.

DeleteVery Nice!!! I picked up a 3 point log splitter last weekend cheap but I plan on re-selling it because I already have trailer mounted one. I actually have been funding a lot of my homesteading costs by dealing in used tractors and equipment. I don't generally post about that side of things because someone locally could pinpoint me easily if they cross referenced some of my ads and stuff.

DeleteWe always borrow a log splitter when we have a heap to split much simpler than an axe. We could have bought secondhand but borrowing is even cheaper! All the equipment we had here was secondhand and now it's all been resold to give someone else a bargain

DeleteMy son has made two log splitters so far. They aren't upright though they lie on the ground. One of them is on wheels so you can tow it to a tree in the field. What make of tractor do you have? We have Ford tractors.
ReplyDeleteOur little tractor is a Kubuto compact hubby saw it for sale just as we moved here, we dont have a need for a big tractor not to say he wouldnt like one :-)
DeleteI have used these and an axe and even wedges in the past, I know which one I preferred. I like secondhand/preloved/previously owned whatever you like to call it. I hate paying VAT the only part of being a pub owner that I hated was being an unpaid tax collector. I have borrowed the odd bit of kit, just to see if it was viable to buy. The trouble is that the thing you need to borrow is just what the owner is using now.
ReplyDeletewe had years of just axe and wedges there is still a need for wielding an axe occasionally, there are some things we will hire in rather than buy things that we would only use occasionally unless we saw it for a really good price :-)
DeleteHave not got a log splitter here yet, don't need any wood cut as still do not have a working wood burning stove and fire. Anticipate a quick purchase of this item when fire and Rayburn are working!

DeleteLooking forward to hearing about the goats, I am considering getting some when we move as goats cheese/milk seem to agree with me more than a lot of dairy these days. That looks a handy piece of kit, I'm sure the bearded one would love one :)
ReplyDeleteYou can get log splitters that work stand alone if you are doing logs then I would recommend one as we get older so do our backs :-)

ReplyDeleteThe mole drill came with the tractor its used for making drainage, not something we have a need for but you never know :-)
DeleteWhat a practical thing to buy - that will save you SO much hard work. I agree about buying good 2nd hand machinery - what you save on new prices, allows you to kit it out.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing we bought new was the forks we couldnt find any used and needed them to move pallets of fire wood, we know some-one who is selling up there small holding and we have earmarked some more attachments from Him :-)
