Ham Soup

The other week I made a big pot of Ham Soup and froze portions of it so I could have some at a later date, I had some tonight with oatcakes, Ham Soup was a regular family meal when we were kids, it was a firm favourite of mine and it became a favourite for my kids, it was a typical Scottish meal.
First you need a smoked ham shank as they are called in Scotland, south of the border they call them hocks.
To a large pan add a load of orange lentils 
sorry I don't have a measurement, add the shank and cover with water
bring to the boil and simmer for about 3 hours until the lentils are soft, then add a load of peeled chopped potatoes, bring back to the boil and simmer until the potatoes are cooked 
lift out ham shank, take off some of the meat 
and add it to the soup and serve
The remainder of the ham shank can be frozen and used for quiches or added to pies or casseroles
You get a fair amount of meat off a ham shank I get 2 shanks from the butcher for £5
A pot of soup will make about 6 servings.

  2. This looks good! Is it not really salty? Or do you soak the hock first? I might have to try this next time I'm going to make a meat soup!

    1. It is salty in comparison to todays foods, thats why the scottish are so unhealthy too much salt, you can soak the hock and pour away the salty water if you prefer, its all down to personal taste.
